Glossary of Pottery and Porcelain Terms   by Sarah Martin

Biscuit: The condition of the clay figure or vessel before glazing. Biscuit was often fired once, then decorated, and after glazing fired again.

Cream-Ware: Cream-ware is a generic term applied to all light-colored earthenware from about 1750 onwards. Wedgwood’s cream-ware was a variety. Much of the so-called cream-ware paste when broken presents a white appearance.

Enamels: The term “enamel” indicates the colors used either in painted or printed decoration over glaze, although the term more correctly applied indicates the coating covering such pastes as Delft ware.

Glaze: The liquid with which the body of the pottery or porcelain is covered before firing. This coating is distinguished by different terms. Thus, there is lead or galena glaze, the glaze formed by sulphide of lead in powder, dusted on the ware as in the earlier forms of pottery.

Afterwards a liquid lead glaze in which vessels were dipped was used. Salt-glaze was the glaze produced by throwing common salt into the kiln, the vapor which resulted depositing a fine layer or glaze over the ware.

Jasper-Ware: The fine, hard, unglazed stoneware, so richly decorated in cameo relief, first employed by Wedgwood, afterwards imitated by other potters. This body contains a large proportion of barium sulphate (barytes).

Kaolin: This, the purest form of clay, was found the most suitable for porcelain in China, where it was first used. It is hydrated silica of alumina. The kaolin found in England – chiefly in Cornwall is frequently spoken of as “Cornish clay.”

Lustre Ware: The remarkable lustre decoration of earthenware, producing varied metallic hues, is formed by thin layers of gold, platinum, copper, or silver.

Marks: The marks of makers of pottery and porcelain were sometimes impressed with a metal stamp when the paste was in a soft state, at others painted under the glaze, and a few instances over glaze. They were indications of owners of the works, of the artist who modeled or decorated the piece, of the pattern, of ornament, or form of the object.

They were also in some instances indications of quality, different colored marks being used to distinguish between some of the finer pieces and ordinary models. Then, again, many marks were changed, indicating transfer of ownership, the incorporation of other works, royal patronage and change in the composition of the paste or body of the ware.

Opaque China: A term sometimes applied to earthenware having a white or chalk body, finished to give it the external appearance of porcelain.

Oven: The oven or kiln is the furnace in which the saggers containing the pottery are placed for firing. There are varieties of ovens or kilns, including the muffle-kiln used for glazing after decoration.

Over-Glaze: This denotes the condition of manufacture appertaining to decoration or painting applied on the glazed body, the decoration being afterwards fixed by a second firing.

Paste: Paste is the term denoting the body of the pottery or porcelain. Soft paste was usually obtained by the use of a large proportion of bone ash in the composition, hard paste denoting the porcelain body consisting chiefly of feldspar and kaolin.

Slip: The semi-fluid material of clay and water applied in making pottery, sometimes in decoration.

Slip-Decoration: A form of decoration produced by running slip in pattern over the pottery before firing. Slip decoration is usually effected by using different colored slips producing color effects without painting.

Transfer Printing: Transfer printing from designs engraved on copper plates, transferred on tissues, is a method of ornamenting pottery frequently resorted to. The transfers on paper, after being applied to the surface of the ware, are fixed by heat.

Under-Glaze: This term is used in reference to the form of decoration or painting applied on the biscuit before glazing or firing. It is a process of transferring the print, from the tissue to the biscuit, which is afterwards glazed and fired. The process was used at Caughley about 1780, and soon afterwards adopted at Worcester, the Staffordshire Potteries, and elsewhere.
